Can you believe it? It's that time of year again and the tradition continues! In fact, it's our 18 year of having Santa in the studio! Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend from 10am-4pm we will be hosting Santa's visit to the Flathead Valley. No appointments necessary, no obligation, but some great prices on great photo memories! Big Sky Country

Traveling to far eastern Montana to my home town of Glendive (West Dakota), I was struck by how green the entire state is for the end of July! Big round hay bales lay by the thousands in fields all along both highway #200 and #2. Fort Peck dam had water going over the spillway for the first time in decades. The BNSF grain cars went on forever along the highline. And then of course there was the severe storms, with tornado warnings, lighting and high winds blowing dirt into North Dakota! It's summertime in Montana!

I really enjoy doing the promotion imagery for the Northwest Ballet Company. I'm going on 18 years as their "official" photographer. The girls (and guys) have great training and we always come out with some great shots. "Alice in Wonderland" is this years big Mother's Day weekend presentation. Look for promotional posters to be posted all over town soon!

PPA's annual Imaging USA convention is now over and I'm headed home from San Antonio. My thanks go out to our lovely model Katie who sat for two days in front of the camera and claimed to never have gotten bored!

Also want to thank Virtual Backgrounds for their support and to all the many friends and colleagues who I got to chat with!

After sitting in on Council and Certification meetings, I must state the importance of getting certified if you are a photographer and choose certified if you are looking for a photographer!

Two Medicine and the Eastern Front

Though the weather was a bit dismal, sunrise on the eastern front provided a brief opportunity to capture Two Medicine Lake in Glacier Park during the "magic hour". Snow is predicted in the higher elevations of the park today! Gads!

We've Moved!

We recently acquired the Flathead Gallery building in beautiful downtown Somers! We are now located right off Hwy. 93 in Somers. We've got a much bigger camera room, a large gallery, access to Flathead Lake and soon a comfortable projection room where clients will be able to view the results of their photo session! We are busy with renovations but ready to photograph sessions starting February 9th! Make note of our new phone number, 406-857-2109.

A Milestone Reached

Well, I finally did it. I finally managed to accumulate the merits needed to get my Masters Degree! This image, "A Little Piece of Heaven" was accepted into the Professional Photographers of America's Loan Collection, which earned me the last of the necessary merits to receive the degree. A proud, meaningful milestone in my photographic career. Thanks to all my friends and family for their help and support in achieving it!

We had another wonderful turn out for our annual Santa weekend November 29-30. Lots of children and parents alike got the opportunity to tell Santa what was on their wish list and have their picture taken with Santa as well. A special weekend for us at the studio and we want to extend our thanks to those whose showed up and wish you all a "Merry Christmas"!

Hike to Iceberg Lake Interrupted

For obvious reasons, the hike to Iceberg Lake in Glacier National Park was cut short after hiking to within a half mile of the lake. I spotted the bear coming down the trail in time to avoid any confrontation, but he kept coming down the trail for a few hundred yards before disappearing. Not knowing exactly where he went, the decision was made to call it a day and head back down.

Baldy Moutain Fire near Lakeside

Have had some excitement near the house in Lakeside the last couple days with a fire that is only three miles away. Helicopters and crews are working hard. Helicopter was making a round trip from the lake near my dock to the fire and back in 3 minutes!

Competition Results Are In!

After anguishing over the four images that would ultimately get sent into the Professional Photographers of America International Print Competition, and consulting some Master Photographer friends from around the country, I finally decided on these four. The image of the sailboats received one merit, while the image of the staircase was accepted into the "Loan Collection", earning two merits. These three merits were just enough for me to earn my Masters Degree which I'll receive at the annual Imaging USA conference in Nashville, TN next January. Whew!

West of Helena on Highway 12 is McDonald Pass. The last few days of April and winter still doesn't seem to want to let go. Thankfully, the conditions got better before they worse and I'm home safe from the annual Montana Professional Photographers Association convention.

Gads! Winter still has a strong grip on the valley. This is the boulevard in Lakeside. Far from the sun and warmth of the Nevada desert or Hill Country of Texas.

Vegas Convention

The annual WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) convention was held in Las Vegas Feb. 15-18. I attended a few receptions and meetings and managed to capture this image from a room at the MGM hotel. It's a good example of "HDR" imaging, which means High Dynamic Range. Three photos layered together to capture the most detail in shadows AND highlights.

The Red Rocks west of Las Vegas are a great place for photos, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. Another experiment in HDR.

Virtual Backgrounds Workshop

I just returned from doing a monthly workshop for Virtual Backgrounds in Texas. I share with other professional photographers the advantages of using this system in the studio. It's always great to work with others from all over the country to exchange creative and business ideas. Thanks to Jennifer who did a great job modeling for us!

Sunrise On Flathead Lake

Being the dead of winter, it isn't often this kind of sunrise happens in the valley. The colors were spectacular for only a minute. This week looks to be almost spring like with temps in the mid 40's.

It's deep winter in the Flathead and though temps have come up into the 20's, a long lasting inversion has held in humidity and the chill that accompanies it. The resulting frost covers the branches, bushes and grass along the north shore of Flathead Lake.

Christmas Eve in the Flathead

It's been colder than normal in the valley and just before the lake starts to freeze over in the bays, I managed to capture the steam coming off the water. The water is near freezing temperature and I find it amazing that it could "steam", but when it's below zero for air temperature, I guess the difference is enough to cause this steamy effect.

I really enjoy doing portraits of babies. Despite their very young age, I try to capture a variety of expressions. The most memorable, timeless baby portraits aren't the ones with the traditional smile, they are ones like these! Ones that make you go, "OMG"!

So I am fortunate to work with my friend Mad Mary on our annual calendar project, "Montana Women in the Trades". Our 2009 calendar will feature a dozen very interesting women from across the state. On this particular day, I photographed Michelle, a flight instructor who is quite beautiful, outgoing, witty and gutsy. I say gutsy because she had me taxi, takeoff, fly the plane and then LAND the plane, never having done so before. She turned the tables and took this shot of me (I retouched the sweat running down my forehead). She was actually a very confident woman... confident in her skill as an instructor and confident in my being a fast learner!

New Exhibit On Display at K.R.M.C.

I was fortunate enough to have 42 large canvas Gallery Wrap images hang in the OB Department of the Kalispell Regional Medical Center recently. It's an impressive display that will hang for years to come. All the images are of newborn babies, pregnant women, young families with newborns, siblings with new baby brother, etc. that I've taken of clients over the past few years. I invite everyone to take a peek at the exhibit anytime you are in the vicinity of the hospital. Some of my favorite images are featured.

This spot is one of my favorites in the Flathead Valley. If I see an interesting sky or the potential for a great sunset, I try to head there and capture whatever God is creating for us at that moment. It's interesting to sit quietly and notice the differences in the colors from season to season, the shapes of the clouds differ as well and the ever encroaching development becomes more difficult to avoid in the viewfinder.

I wanted to take a second and thank you again for everything you did for us here in Washington!!! I wanted to share with you what happened yesterday to me. I was helping my sister work at the local bridal show here in town and during the fashion show they played the song you put on our DVD slideshow.... Anyways, the song started and the tears just kind of uncontrollably welled up!!! I had no idea how much that song affected me. It was amazing! The first time I heard it I was watching our beautiful pictures you sent me. I had to go home and immediately watch the slideshow THREE TIMES last night. I have yet to watch it without crying. All happy tears! My marriage to Kyle is fantastic and I love him more and more everyday. I will forever be so grateful for the amazing pictures you took of us on our special day!
